As the seasons turn & we get back to a little more quadding, we thought it might be time for a quick overview on some Polaris ATV maintenance.
All internal combustion engines require at least 2 basics; spark & fuel and we're going to give you a little ATV carburetor overview.
A dirty, clogged carburetor or one with bad gaskets, needle, float etc. can ruin your day. No fuel to your Polaris ATV motor, you're going nowhere, so let's get going!
Here's a great video overview on ATV carburetors, carburetor operation, how to remove, overhaul, carburetor adjustment & replacement...
ATV Carburetor Operation:
The ATV carburetor does what all carburetors do, they mix the proper amount of fuel with the proper amount of air to properly feed your engine...ideally. As you increase throttle, fuel fills the carburetor float bowl.
Air pressure differences then suck fuel from the bowl, air through the ATV airbox & pushes the mix through the carb reeds and into your combustion chamber.
The air passes past the choke plate, through the venturi where the fuel is then pulled from the bowl via the needle. As this happens, the carburetor float level changes and more fuel flows into the bowl...ideally!
There are a number of factors that can cause problems with this process...
ATV Carburetor Problems:
There are a number of problem areas with ATV carburetors, doesn't matter if they're Polaris ATVs or any other brand.
All ATV carbs, whether it's a Mikuni carburetor or a Keihin carb, are susceptible to dirt. Number one cause of all carburetor problems is dirt & it comes in many forms; a bad ATV air filter lets it in, impurities from fuel build up on the interior parts, contamination from a fun day of splashing through dirt, mud & water all leave you with gunk in the working parts of your carburetor.
As you watch the carburetor video(to the right) you can clearly see how easily dirt or a gummy interior could case problems with your carburetor float (it sucks when those floats stick), clog jets and other small parts, so clean up your act!
ATV Carburetor Adjustments:
Float Adjustments ~ An improperly adjusted float causes either too much or too little fuel so mind your level. Needle Valve Adjustments ~ Adjusting the needle valve allows varying degrees of fuel into the air/fuel mixture. Get this right & your ATV ride is fun, get it wrong and your carb runs to rich or too lean; a lot less smooth and fun. Jet Adjustments ~ Jet adjustments include the Main jet, it is attached to the Needle jet. The other small jet is the Pilot jet which is responsible for fuel delivery at idle and low rpm.
